7 Books to Get You Out of a Reading Slump

Well, it’s happening again. I pick up a book and it feels the same as the last, the story line is too slow, or it’s just not what I’m looking for. I’m in a reading slump. This has been happening a lot lately as I’ve been reading more than ever this year and it’s getting harder to find something that feels new and different. If you’re in the same place, here are a few books sure to get you out of a slump no matter what mood you’re in.
If You Want Something Fun
The Summer of Broken Rules by K.L. Walther

This book makes you wish you could experience it yourself. Idyllic setting, summer romance, and a giant game of assassin. It takes place over the course of a week as the wedding festivities ensue. Meredith is recently dumped and has been grieving the loss of her sister. She teams up with one of the groomsmen and their alliance turns into something more. This was one of my favorite reads of 2024. It is fun and light while still having emotional depth. Just all around a great stand alone book.

What Happens After Midnight by K.L. Walther

Another book by the same author that made me want to play along. The whole book takes place in one night, setting up a senior prank while also reconnecting with a first love. Lily has always done everything by the book, so when she is anonymously invited to take part in the annual senior prank she is surprised and excited to do something a little risky before her high school years are behind her. She ends up going around campus setting up clues for the prank with her ex while also navigating the feelings they still have for each other. A really cute coming of age story.

If You Want to Be On The Edge of Your Seat
Verity by Colleen Hoover

This book is disturbing, suspenseful, and keeps you guessing until the last page. If you read mostly romance and are looking for something thrilling this is it. Lowen is hired to finish writing a series for a successful writer (Verity) who has become paralyzed and unable to communicate. She stumbles upon an autobiography in Verity’s office and is horrified to discover the inter-workings of her mind before her accident. She hides it from Verity’s husband to spare his feelings, but as she grows closer to him she is faced with the decision of whether she should expose Verity for who she truly is.

Colleen Hoover has written many of my favorite books, they all feel different and most of them are stand alones which are usually harder for me to get into because I like getting invested in characters, but she does such a great job. I would recommend reading pretty much anything by her, but this one is definitely different from the rest.
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

Another chilling book that was a fast paced read. A woman down on her luck begins working for a family only to have to navigate constant warfare with the wife, Nina. She sees it through, but is met with constant manipulation and lies. I want to say that I didn’t see the plot twist coming, but I kind of did. However, I still found it unpredictable and I could not have guessed how the rest of the story played out.

If You Want Something Multifaceted
Funny Story by Emily Henry

When Daphne’s fiance leaves her for his female best friend, she ends up moving in with none other than the also recently dumped ex fiance’s female friend’s now ex boyfriend (say that five times fast). They form a plan to have their own fun by pretending to date each other. This author took the common trope of fake dating and somehow made it refreshing and different, I found all of the characters and storylines in this book very original and unlike what I’m used to reading. There were a lot of meaningful aspects to this book outside of the romance as well relating to friendship, complicated family dynamics, and finding yourself again as an adult.

The Wedding People by Alison Espach

This book was a pleasant surprise for me. It has a dark start with the main character planning her suicide but getting derailed by a wedding happening the same weekend. An unlikely friendship, a forbidden love interest, and a lesson in taking accountability for your life. It was surprisingly fun and kept me interested the whole way through.

If You Just Need to Feel Something:
After by Anna Todd

I’m sorry but I had to put this one on the list. When I picked this book up in 2019 I hadn’t read for fun in 3 years. I finished it in less than 48 hours and then spent an hour at the gym walking it off. Is it toxic? Incredibly. Is it immature and a little dumb? Absolutely. Do I still pick it up from time to time when I need to get out of a rut? Embarrassingly yes. If you haven’t heard of this series before, it’s based around a college freshman, Tessa, who is a classic goody two shoes. She ends up meeting Hardin, classic bad boy, through her roommate and chaos ensues.

I don’t know what it is about this series that is so addicting, but it’s like junk food. You never know what’s going to happen next, it is an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. It will make you angry, annoyed, and frustrated. In my opinion any book that makes you feel something so strongly is worth giving 5 stars.
I hope you found something on this list to get you excited to read again. If you have any suggestions for me, please leave a comment!
